As Downhill or Alpine skiing developed to recreational skiing was born. Skiing down snow-covered hills and mountains added the dimension of speed and skill.

Downhill skiing is more challenging both physically and mentally. As the mountain pulls the skier down the hill, the demands for agility and strength kick in with an adrenaline rush the skier is looking for.

Once the ski lift was invented to carry skiers to the top of the mountain, alpine skiing really took off. Today, most regions of the world with mountains and snow offer alpine skiing in the winter to those who are interested, along with cross country skiing and other winter sports. Most ski facilities offer basic training, along with beginning trails and equipment rentals on site.
