The first visitors to Cozumel were religious pilgrimages for women came to pay homage to the fertility goddess, Ixchel. The Mayan influence dates back to 300 AD and remains strong to this day and is today one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico. Many travel here to dive, snorkel and enjoy long days of endless sunshine.
