There is no more important symbol in New York City than the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island. Although 10 years in the making and terribly underfunded, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York in 1884 in 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates and dedicated in 1886. It has become the American symbol of freedom and welcome to the immigrants who come to the USA looking for a better life.

It is only accessible by taking a Statue Cruise Ferry, departing year round from Battery Park, between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., daily. Hours are extended in late spring, summer and fall. Be prepared for airport-style security and long lines during the summer holidays.

The Ellis Island Immigration Museum offers visitors a fascinating look into the immigrant experience and speaks to the hardships and challenges faced by immigrants passing through Ellis Island. It's well done interactive presentations and overall history is well worth the trip to the museum.
