Skiing And Snowboarding

Evidence suggests that people in Scandinavia started strapping flat, wooden blades to their feet thousands of years ago to help them slide across the snow, rather than to try to slog through it. Little did they realize that their ingenuity just to survive their long, hard winters would eventually develop into a recreational pastime that is enjoyed by millions today throughout the world.

Back country skiing is often defined as skiing on "un-groomed snow and natural terrain." It is similar to cross country skiing and the main idea is to enjoy the scenery while being off the well-travelled paths.

Cross country skiing began thousands of years ago as a means of transportation and is still used for that purpose today.

As Downhill or Alpine skiing developed to recreational skiing was born. Skiing down snow-covered hills and mountains added the dimension of speed and skill.

Heliskiing takes place in areas accessed only by a helicopter. The terrain is varied and the snow is un-groomed. This is not a sport for a novice or budget conscious skier.

Mountain ski touring combines downhill skiing with climbing mountains. No ski lifts are used here so the skier must be able to climb the mountain he/she is going to ski downs. These skiers need to be physically fit so the sport is not for the masses.

The fastest growing aspect of skiing is the "snowboarding." Snowboarding is loosely described as "surfing"” in the snow and is considered an extreme sport. While it still holds the image of a “rebel” youth male sport, snowboarding appeals to men and women alike in many age ranges, and beginners continue to enter the sport at all stages in life.

Snowmobiling began to take off in the 1950's as lightweight design emerged. At first, snowmobiling was a topic of dispute, because snowmobilers like to take advantage of the flexibility of their machines to travel off-road, thereby disrupting otherwise pristine environments. Others objected to snowmobilers because their machines were noisy and polluted the environment.

New Things To Do

  • Aquariums

Oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, and we’ve only explored about 5% of it. That leaves so much of the Earth that we know nothing about. Not everyone can dive right into the water to look at the ocean life, so why not do the next best thing? Aquariums give us a window into a whole other world. Most locations around the world have aquariums; some larger than others.
