Surfing

Come with us as we profile some of our favorite places in the world for surfing. Whether you are just getting started or an experienced surfer, prefer stand-up or body boarding, we'll let you know some great places to go, how to get there, where to stay and who to talk to about catching the waves.

Did you know that Costa Rica, is the third most popular surfing destination in the world? Whether you are into long boarding, wind surfing or kite surfing you can do it someplace in the Caribbean. Many have excellent surf to enjoy and many cater to all levels of expertise. The best Caribbean Islands for surfing are Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.

There are more than 1,000 miles of coastline to explore  in Florida. With an average temperature of 78 degrees from May to September, it is easy to get involved in the sport.  Each Florida region is diverse geographically and home to unique surfer personalities. With a substantial blend of professional and amateur wins, Florida surfing has a massive, active fan base of those attracted to the sport and about half of the East Coast surfers live in Florida.

Surfing is uniquely Hawaiian dating back to the late 1700's when native Hawaiians were seen riding a wood plank on the swells of Kealakekua Bay on Hawaii Island. It probably got its start long ago in ancient Polynesia, later thriving in Hawaii. It was once a sport only reserved for Hawaiian royalty, which is why surfing is often called the “sport of kings.” With the end of the Hawaiian taboo system in 1819, commoners were allowed to freely participate in the sport.

New Things To Do

  • Aquariums

Oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, and we’ve only explored about 5% of it. That leaves so much of the Earth that we know nothing about. Not everyone can dive right into the water to look at the ocean life, so why not do the next best thing? Aquariums give us a window into a whole other world. Most locations around the world have aquariums; some larger than others.

  • Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling began to take off in the 1950's as lightweight design emerged. At first, snowmobiling was a topic of dispute, because snowmobilers like to take advantage of the flexibility of their machines to travel off-road, thereby disrupting otherwise pristine environments. Others objected to snowmobilers because their machines were noisy and polluted the environment.
