Admiral Horatio Nelson established Great Britain's most important Caribbean military base as a way to "hide" his sailing fleet from the enemy. But now, no one wants to hide from one of the Caribbean's premier vacation destinations. They want to experience the warm steady winds, enjoy the complex coastline of safe harbors and the protected nearly unbroken wall of coral reef surrounding the islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

 

The expansive, winding coastline has created many "hidden gems" for tourists to discover. The powdery white sand beaches and the coral reefs that has caused so many ship wrecks in the past have made Antigua and Barbuda one of the best spots in the Caribbean for snorkelers, scuba divers and water sport enthusiasts alike.

Antigua is also home to one of the premier sailing events in the world, Sailing Week and the fascinating island of Barbuda, once a scavenger's paradise because so many ships wrecked on its reefs, is now home to one of the region's most significant bird sanctuaries.
