Stockholm consists of fourteen major islands and more than 24,000 small islands, islets and skerrys forms an archipelago surrounding the main city. Stockholm and its beautiful islands are visited by more than 17 million travelers a year. This makes the capital of Sweden one of the major destinations in northern Europe. The most popular way to see the archipelago, called the skärgården by locals, is by ferry. You can as easily go for five weeks as for five hours and buy tickets accordingly.

Old Town features charming cobbled streets, alleyways, faded mustard and rust colored town houses and meeting squares reflecting north German architecture. It was once considered the slum of Stockholm but it is now a sought after address and is one big melting pot of cafés, restaurants, tourist shops, studios, galleries and museums including the Nobel Museum, the Post Museum, and The Royal Coin Cabinet in the National Museums of Economy.

The main square Stortorget is the centre of Old Town and near the main attractions on the island. The Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) and The Royal Chapel (Storkyrkan) are definite attractions. The changing of the Guards takes place outside the Royal Palace and in the summer months. A visit to some of approx. 70 fascinating museums is a great idea for a cloudy day.

Fifteen hundred Stockholm restaurants serve all kind of international cuisine, and the famous amusement park Gröna Lund, beautifully situated at Djurgården promises a day full of fun & joy. You can boat, hike, fish, sea kayak, bike and swim and even ice yacht.

A visit to Uppsala and Sigtuna, north of Stockholm makes for a perfect day trip. There are many inspiring and enchanting historical, cultural and modern-day treasures in both. Gamla, just north of the city, boasts impressive 6th century burial mounds and in its museum and you can learn about the legend of the Svea kings and gory human sacrifices (kids love this bit). Sigtuna, Sweden's first town, features small town charm as well as Viking and medieval history.

Shopping is poplar in Stockholm. Östermalm is the hub of shopping glamour in Stockholm as is the streets in and around Stureplan where you can shop for high-end fashion house brands. Sturegallerian and Nordiska Kompaniet are favorites as well. There are many shopping areas for historical artifacts as well.
